The Shannonflowing south enters Lough Ree - The Lake of
the Kings - at Lanesborough.
There is enough open water
for sailing here and it is the home to the second oldest yacht
club in the world, Lough Ree Yacht Club.
Continuing south the river divides County
Galway from Laois, Offaly and Westmeath. It flows apace, past
Athlone a waterways metropolis, by Clonmacnoise, the ancient
monument and pilgrimage site to Lough Derg. En route one many
divert to Ballinasloe via the River Suck or to Dublin via Grand
Canal.
There is a myriad of things to do ashore. There museums, grat houses
and historical sites and festival to visit. Whether you cycle, golf, horse ride
or horse race, fish or walk. Itīs all here for the visitor.
Finally for the ornithologist there is the Shannon
Callows near Banagher, home to thousands of birds winter and
summer.
